How to get your kick and bass really working together
in Cubase SX ? Here is an easy Sidechaining tutorial for Cubase SX using Waves C1 plugin.

Create a Group channel. This will be used for your kick and bass.
Load up C1 Compressor-sc on the group channel.
Buss your mono bass track to the right hand side of the stereo buss.
Send your kick track through your aux sends to the left hand side of the stereo buss.

Open up the C1 sidechain on the Group channel. Choose Sidechain L>R near your C1’s output on the GUI. This will mean that the left side will compress the right. Select 0.01ms for attack time and about 50ms for release. Lower threshold until you hear your desired amount of gain reduction. Make the ratio about 3:1 or more depending on how much pumping you want.

… and this was another work-around, which is a lot more detailed.

1. Bounce your Bass VSTi to a mono track in Cubase SX.
2. Duplicate your Kick track and pan it all the way to the left. Buss this duplicated track to the group channel with the C1-sidechain on it.
3. Pan your mono bass track all the way to the right and Buss it to the group with the C1-sidechain on it.

Now the kick will be coming in the C1 from the left input and you shouldn’t hear it after you’ve selected L>R on the C1. You should only hear the normal kick track that is still panned in the centre. The bass is coming in from the right so you should hear it on the right speaker after it goes through the C1. Lower the threshold on the C1 and raise the ratio. Now the bass should be on the right speaker getting compressed by the silent kick which is coming in on the left.

4. Re-balance the pan on the group channel until the bass is back in the centre again. If this was Cubase 5, all you would need to do is put the left pan back to C.
